Benjamin FRANKLIN

M St. James Paddington, London, England FHL 579,634.

NOTES/LOG:
-- Benjamin was either dead or divorced from his wife Mary Ann Godsall when she and the family emigrated to New Zealand. Mary Ann actually sailed under the name of Mary Ann Maund. In fact the youngest three children were called Maund on the shipping manifest. The two older children went by the name of Franklin. Mary Ann and the children sailed on a the ship S. Lloyds which included only women and children and the crew. Richard Maund sailed on a ship for men only. It was an experiment that failed. In the book "Landfall Nelson" it explains that there were women cohabiting with the crew. In addition there was disease which cost the lives of over 40 children. One of Mary Ann's children, Thomas, was one of those that died. Marriage certificate of Richard Maund and Mary Ann now found.
-- I believe St. Mary is not a parish, though seemingly listed as such, but a district of the St. Marylebone part of London. The actual parish is the Holy Trinity Parish Church.

OCCUPATION: Bootmaker.

NOTES/LOG:
-- I believe St. Mary is not a parish, though seemingly listed as such, but a district of the St. Marylebone part of London. The actual parish is the Holy Trinity Parish Church.
-- Sailed on the Lloyds 11 Sep 1841 from Gravesend, England to NZ. Story listed in pp 104-116 in Landfall Nelson. Also, a Richard Maund sailed on the Whitby from Gravesend 27 Apr 1841. Born 1811, was a Miner. He was the husband, most likely, of Mary Ann Franklin. They left only a few days apart.
